I did try running the office 2007 diagnose and repair tool, also did not help. I was really mad looking at all the possibilities. By the way, I have disabled the Windows firewall on both machines, and have Zonealarm on both. Word hangs until killed via Task Manager.

This issue can be replicated fresh install XP SP3 with Office 07 SP2.Not sure what to look for in Procmon or Process Hacker traces.

Simply copied the file in question from the network share and worked off the desktop.After performing the Open and Repair > Extract > Recover Formulas and saving as a new file, I find it a little odd that I'm unable to end the problem process in Task Manager, and with excel I'm able to start another instance and work happily on that. There are a ton of excel files and doing an open and repair and recover on all those files would take days. same error. You may need to perform an In-place Upgrade to repair the whole system files and see if the issue persists.
